As part of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Master in Urban Design has the integrity to commit to the interests of the nation and humanity, inspired by the nation’s cultural values based on Pancasila. Our commitment is in line with the vision of Universitas Gadjah Mada as a pioneer of world-class national universities that are distinguished and innovative, serving the interests of the nation and humanity inspired by the nation’s cultural values based on Pancasila, and with strategic goals that lead to the integration of the Postgraduate Program as the backbone (Renstra UGM 2017 -2022).
As part of the Faculty of Engineering, Master in Urban Design is also committed to having an active role in cities engineering; sustainable, cultured, and people-oriented built environment; and following the development and application of science and technology. As part of the Department of Architecture and Planning, Master in Urban Design is committed to being the center of excellence in the scientific and professional development of the urban design field, especially in the Indonesian urban context, as well as being the reference for Asian cities and the world—Indonesian Urban Context for Asia Region and World References.
Since Master in Urban Design was still one of the concentrations in the Master in Architecture, we have had the commitment to be a part in the study and managing of small-medium scale urban problems in Indonesia. Therefore, Master in Urban Design will continue the commitment and standing for more people’s merits. Our built experiences in the urban study have become the real promotion capital for the prospective students interested in the master program of urban design and coming from various cities throughout Indonesia. In addition, formal promotion programs are also carried out through the website, roadshows, and the alumni network of KARTAGAMA (Keluarga Alumni Rancang Kota Gadjah Mada or the alumni association of Urban Design Gadjah Mada).
Since its establishment in 1999 as a concentration of Design for Built Environment, the direction of our study program development has focused on studying and contributing design ideas for the built environment development in small and medium-sized cities (districts and cities). The focus of the study and urban design idea proposals in our learning system is based on understanding the urban problems in many countries as urbanism precedents, and cases in Indonesia’s various cities as important contexts, both because of their “archipelago” (Nusantara) or because of the need for innovative ideas specific to Indonesian cities.
Our study program uses a research-based design approach and professional practice with a comprehensive approach. The Urban Design Studio, as the curriculum core must be the main forum for the academic process that integrates the understanding of real urban problems and the learning process on campus, especially the studio. The process of acquiring knowledge, either through in-class learning support or field learning through researching issues from the real world that place urban spaces as urban research laboratories, will become the material learning for the process of analyzing, which is the basis for the process of synthesizing knowledge for the design development of a built environment.
